THE WALLS GO UP,
THE CRACKS GO DOWN
(AND TO THE LEFT).
The storm in our path.
For us, we, the Zapatista indigenous people, the storm, the war, has lasted for centuries. It came to our lands with the humbug of dominant civilization and religion. In those times, the sword and the cross let the blood of our people.
With the passage of time, the sword was modernized and the cross was dethroned by the religion of capital, but it continued demanding our blood as an offering to the new God: money.
We resist, we have always resisted. Our rebellions were undermined in the disputes between one and another for power. One after another, always up, ordered us to fight and die to serve them, they demanded obedience and subjugation under the lie of liberation. Just like those who said and continue to say to fight, they came and come to command. There was thus alleged independence and false revolutions, those in the past and yet to come. Those above took turns and and continue to take turns, since those times, to govern poorly or aspire to do so. And in times, past and present, their proposal remains the same: for us to offer the blood; while they command or pretend to do so.
And then as in the present, they forget that we don’t forget.
And always women are put down, then and now. Even in the collectives that we were and are.
But their agenda did not only bring pain and death for our people. In the expansion of their domain, Power created new siblings in the misfortune it wrought. It was then that we saw the worker and farm worker become one with our pain, and be crushed under the four wheels of the deadly wagon of Capital.
Content with itself, Power advanced on its journey through time, and those below grew in number, widening the basis on which the Power is Power. We saw that teachers, students, artisans, small shopkeepers, professionals, and the etceteras with different names but identical griefs join our ranks.
It was not enough. Power is exclusive, discriminatory, a select space. It was then that difference began to be persecuted openly. Color, race, creed, sexual orientation, were expelled from the paradise that was promised, being that hell was to be their permanent home.
Youth, childhood, and old age followed. Power thus transformed its agenda into the terms of persecution. All of those below are guilty: for being a woman, for being a child, for being young, for being an adult, for being elderly, for being human.
but to expand exploitation, dispossession and repression and discrimination, Power also expanded the resistance… and the rebellions.
We saw then, as we do now, to lift the eyes of the many. Different but similar in rage and insubordination.
Power knows that it only exists from what it draws from those who work. It needs you.
To each rebellion responded by and responds by buying or tricking those below, imprisoning and killing those above. Do not fear your demands, it is your example that terrifies Power.
It was not enough. To dominate Nations, the Power of Capital sought to put the whole of humanity under its heavy yoke.
It was not enough. Capital aims to manage nature, to tame it, to domesticate it, to exploit it. In other words, to destroy it.
Always with war, its destructive progress, Capital, Power, it first demolished fiefdoms and kingdoms. And built Nations on their ruins.
It then devastated Nations, and on its debris erected the new world order: a global marketplace.
The world became a vast mall of goods. Everything is for sale and is bought: water, wind, Earth, plants and animals, Governments, knowledge, fun, wishes, love, hate, people.
But in the great market of Capital goods are not only exchanged. “Economic freedom” is only a mirage that simulates mutual agreement between the seller and buyer. In reality, the market is based on dispossession and exploitation. The exchange is thus of impunities. Justice has been transformed into a grotesque caricature and on it’s balancing scales, money always weighs more than the truth. And the stability of this tragedy called Capitalism depends on repression and upon contempt.
But that was also not enough. The domination of the material world is not possible if not it does not dominate ideas. The imposition of religion deepened and reached the level of the arts and sciences. Like fashion fads, philosophies and beliefs came forth and continue to emerge. The arts and sciences ceased to be characteristic of being human and arranged themselves within the global marketplace. Knowledge then became private property, and the same thing happened to recreation and pleasure.
Capital, thus, became consolidated as a great crushing machine, using not only humanity as a whole as raw material to produce goods, but also knowledge, the arts,… and nature.
The destruction of the planet, the millions of displaced people, the rise of crime, unemployment, poverty, the weakness of Governments, the wars to come, are not products of the excesses of Capital, or a wrong turn of a system that promised order, progress, peace and prosperity.
No, all these misfortunes are the essence of this system. It feeds on them, it grows at their expense.
Destruction and death are the fuel of the great machine of Capital.
They have been, are and will be futile efforts to “rationalize” its operation, to “humanize” it. The irrational and its inhumanity are its key pieces. There is no possible repair. There was not a remedy before. And now we can no longer dim its criminal path.
The only way to stop the machine is to destroy it.
In the current world war, the dispute is between the system and humanity.
This is why the anti-capitalist struggle is a struggle for humanity.
Those who still seek to “fix” or “salvage” the system, are actually proposing global mass suicide, a posthumous sacrifice Power.
But there is no solution in the system.
And the horror, the condemnation, resignation or the hope that the worst has already passed and things will only improve will be enough.
No. The truth is that it is going to get worse.
For those reasons, and the ones that each will add from their own particular experiences and geographies, is that we must resist, we must rebel, we must say ‘no’, we must fight, we must organize.
That is why we have to lift the winds from below with our resistance and rebellion, with our organization.
This is the only way we can survive. It is only possible way we can live.
And only then, as was our word 25 years ago, we can see…
“When the storm subsides,
When the rain and fire leave the Earth in peace again,
the world will no longer be the world, but something better.”
The war and the outside and inside walls.
The suffering caused by the war was formerly the exclusive heritage of the world below, it now widens its calamities.
On every corner of the planet, the hatred and contempt are intended to destroy families, entire communities, Nations and continents. It is no longer necessary to have committed a crime or be accused of being a criminal, being human is enough to be suspicious.
Caused by the greed of the big money, the current nightmare is blamed upon those who suffer from it. Borders are no longer just dotted lines on a map or customs checkpoints, they are now walls of armies and police, made of cement and bricks, laws and persecution. In all of the world of those above, the hunting of human beings increases and is celebrated in clandestine competitions: He who removes, jails, detains, and murders the most people wins.
As we have been saying for more than 20 years, neo–liberal globalization did not bring the emergence of the global village, but the fragmentation and dissolution of the so-called “nation-States”. Then, as in now, we call that process with the name that best describes it: “world war” (the fourth, according to us).
The only thing that was globalized was the market and, with it, war.
For those who operate machines and help the Earth to give birth, the borders were always and remain what they have always been: prisons.
Back then, two decades ago, our statement provoked the mocking smiles of international intellectuals chained to old and outdated dogmas. And today those same people stutter to a frenetic reality, and they rehearse old recipes, or move to the fashionable idea that, after a complex theoretical elaboration, only hides the truth: that they do not have the faintest idea of what is happening, what follows, or of what preceded the current nightmare.
They complain. The planning of those above promised them a world without borders, and its result is a planet full of chauvinistic trenches.
The world was not transformed into a gigantic megalopolis without borders, but into a large sea shaken by a storm that has no precedent of equal magnitude. In it, millions of displaced people (who, with a dramatic media development, are unified under the name of “migrants”) are shipwrecked in small boats, hoping to be rescued by the gigantic ocean liner of Capital.
But not only it will not do so; it, the great Capital, is the primary culprit of the storm that already threatens the existence of humanity.
Under the clumsy disguise of fascist nationalism, the dark times retrograde further and claim privilege and attention. Tired of ruling from the shadows, big Capital dismantles the lies of “citizenship” and “equality” before the laws of the market.
The flag of “liberty, equality and fraternity” in which Capitalism dressed up its emergence into becoming the dominant system of the world, is already only a dirty and discarded rag in the dustbin of the history of those above.
Finally the system reveals itself and shows its true face and vocation. “Infinite war, war everywhere”, reads the emblem of the superb liner sailing in a sea of blood and shit. It is money and not artificial intelligence which combats against humanity in the decisive battle: the battle for survival.
No one is safe. Not even the naive Capitalist nationalist, who dreamed of the bonanza that free world markets would offer, nor the conservative middle class surviving between the dream of being powerful and the reality of being the pastor of the herd instead.
Not to mention the working class of the farms and the city, in the worse possible conditions that were once unimaginable.
And, to complete this apocalyptic image, the millions of displaced people and migrants bashing against the border walls which have suddenly became so real that, at every step of the way, Governments and criminals stand in the way. In the world geography of the media and social networks, the displaced, wandering ghosts without name and without a face, are barely a statistical number whose location mutates regularly.
The timeline? Just one day after the promise of the end of history, of the solemn declaration of the supremacy of a system that would give welfare to those who work, promised victory over a Communist “enemy” that sought to curtail freedom, impose dictatorships and generate poverty, an eternity promised that would nullified all the former genealogies. The same schedule just yesterday announcing that world history was just beginning. But it appears that it is not true, that everything was but the prelude to the most frightening nightmare.
Capitalism as a world system collapses, and, desperate, the great captains of industry do not know to where go. This is why they retreat to their original hideouts.
They offer the impossible: local Salvation against a global catastrophe. And trinkets sell well among a middle class that fades into those below in earnings, but aims to fill the economic gap with endorsements of race, creed, color and sex. Salvation from those above is Anglo-Saxon, white, male and Christian.
And now, people who lived on the crumbs that fell from the tables of the great capitalists, appear desperate since the walls are also built with them in mind. And, the mighty, aim to lead the opposition to this warlike policy. Thus we see the intellectual right wing make gestures of annoyance and try to advance shy and ridiculous protests. Because no, globalization was not the triumph of freedom. It was and is the current stage of tyranny and slavery.
Nations no longer exist, although even their Governments have not noticed it. Their flags and national emblems look frayed and faded. Destroyed by the globalization of those above, made sick from the parasite that is Capital and with corruption as its only form of identification, national Governments, with awkward urgency, seek to protect themselves and attempt the impossible task of rebuilding what they once were.
In the sealed compartment of its walls and customs, the system inoculates social mediocrity with the opium of a reactionary and nostalgic nationalism, xenophobia, racism, sexism and homophobia as a plan of salvation.
Borders multiply within each territory, not only those that are painted on maps. Also, and above all, the borders that give rise to corruption and crime fashioned into Government.
The postmodern bonanza was not but a balloon inflated by financial capital. Reality came and pricked it: millions displaced by the great war fill the land and waterways, huddle at customs checkpoints and are making cracks in the walls that exist and those to come. Encouraged once before by big Capital, fundamentalisms become fertile ground for their unification proposals: “from terror will be born a single thought, ours”. After being fed a few dollars, the beast of terrorism threatens the House of its creator.
And the same thing happens in the United States of America, as in Western Europe or in neo–Czarist Russia, the beast writhes and tries to protect itself. It situates the most crass stupidity and ignorance there (and not only there), through ruling figures, it summarizes its proposal: “return to the past”.
But no, America will never be great again. Never again. Nor the entire system as a whole. It doesn’t matter what those above do. System has already reached the point of no return.
Against Capital and its walls: all of the cracks.
The international Capitalist offensive against racial and national difference, promoting the construction of cultural walls and legal walls made of cement and steel, seeks to shrink the planet. They seek to create a world where only those above fit and are equal among themselves.
It sounds ridiculous, but it is so: they cope with the storm system not by seeking to build roofs to form shelter, but walls behind which to hide.
This new phase of the war waged by Capital against humanity must be confronted, yes, with organized resistance and rebellion, but also with the solidarity and support to all those whose lives, liberties and wellbeing come under attack.
For that reason:
Considering that the system is unable to stop the destruction.
Considering that, for those below and to the left, there is no room for complacency and resignation.
Considering that it is time to organize ourselves to fight and is its time to say “NO” to the nightmare that those from above impose upon us.
THE EZLN‘S SIXTH COMMISSION AND ZAPATISTA SUPPORT BASES CALL FOR:
I.-to the campaign world:
Against the walls of Capital:
resistance, rebellion, solidarity and support from below and to the left.
In an effort to call for the organization and the global resistance against the aggression of the big money and their respective managers on the planet, and that terrify millions of people around the world:
We make the call to organize ourselves centering autonomy, to resist and to rebel against the harassment, detentions and deportations. If someone is has to go, that it is them, those above. Every human being has the right to struggle to be free and to live in dignity in the place that they see fit, and they have the right to fight to stay there. Resistance against detention, displacement and deportations are a responsibility, as well as it is a duty is to help those who rebel against such arbitrary things REGARDLESS OF THE BORDERS.
We should seek to let everybody know that they are not alone, that their pain and rage is a view into the distance, that their resistance not is only recognized, but that it is also supported with even with our smallest of possibilities.
You have to organize yourselves. We must resist. We have to say “NO” to persecutions, to deportations, to prisons, to walls, to borders. And we must say “NO” to bad national Governments that have been and are complicit in this politics of terror, destruction and death. Solutions will not come from above, because that is where the problems were born.
For this reason we call adherents of the sixth declaration in its entirety to organize, according to their time, mode and geography, to support and activities of those who resist and rebel against the deportations. Be it in supporting them to return to their homes, in creating “sanctuaries” or support existing ones, with consultation and creating legal funds, with the arts and sciences, with festivals and demonstrations, with trade boycotts and media, in cyberspace, be it wherever and whatever. In all the spaces where we move, it is our duty to support and to be in solidarity.
It was time to create solidarity committees with all of humanity that is criminalized and persecuted. Today, more than ever before, your home is also our home.
As the Zapatistas that we are, our strength is small, and although our agenda is deep and wide, our geography is limited.
For this reason, and to support those who resist the detentions and deportations, for several weeks the sixth Commission of the EZLN has initiated contacts with individuals, groups, collectives and organizations adhering to the sixth in the world, to see how to send them a little help so that they serve as a base to launch or continue all sorts of activities and actions in favor of those that are pursued.
