aaahhh, romanticas, grupera music from my parents generation, the late 70’s early 80’s, you know the groups I’m talking about, Leo Dan, Las Muecas, Los Chicanos, Terricolas and La Tropa Loca. Bands that made your body feel warm and your mind feel free. It’s just something about that synthesized keyboard or the Mexican tenor voice that touches the depths within. Music that made me an optimist, to expect the impossible to the heavy doo wop flavor, swooning voices and nostalgic rhythm and bolero covers from ages ago. A sound that prepared me for the R&B of my teenage years. I grew up on this music, with living room carpet slow dances, parents in the middle children on a leg or two, played old school, record on a “tún tún”, even to set the mood for a cena de “fú fú” (candlelight dinner). All the songs were memorized by heart, father singing a strong tenor in the shower.
